EMERYVILLE, CALIF. (September 7, 2004) - LeapFrog SchoolHouse, the school division of LeapFrog Enterprises, Inc. (NYSE: LF), today announced that it has been awarded a $3.8 million contract by Clark County School District, located in Las Vegas, Nevada. Over 22,000 students in grades K-5 will benefit from the agreement, which gives Clark County classrooms access to the award-winning LeapTrack Assessment & Instruction System and The Literacy Center program. These comprehensive programs leverage the patented NearTouch® technology that is featured in LeapFrog SchoolHouse LeapPad and Quantum Pad personal learning tools.
"LeapFrog SchoolHouse is thrilled to partner with Clark County Schools to forward student achievement," said Bob Lally, president of LeapFrog SchoolHouse. "Our programs are research-based and proven effective in improving literacy skills with our innovative technology-empowered curriculum. By appealing to the different ways that children learn - through sight, touch, and sound - students become more actively engaged in the learning process."
Administrators plan to use the multisensory learning tools to promote early literacy and support their newly initiated basal reading programs in Reading First schools. The County will also implement the LeapTrack system to assess student strengths and weaknesses in critical skill areas, deliver individualized instruction for each student, and provide progress reports at the student, classroom, school, and district levels. These results will also help to document learning gains of economically disadvantaged children in Title I schools, where they frequently lack access to effective and affordable education technology like LeapTrack.
Title I funds were used to purchase the LeapTrack system, which will be implemented in 23 schools, affecting 16,000 students in grades K-5. Reading First funds were used to purchase the Literacy Center program, which will reach 6,000 students in grades K-3 throughout 12 Reading First schools. Approximately 1,000 teachers, administrators, and literacy specialists throughout the county will be trained on the products.
"We were given the opportunity to pilot the programs over the last several years, and were extremely impressed with not only the quality of products, but also the integrity of the company," says District Superintendent Carlos Garcia. "LeapFrog SchoolHouse delivers on their promise of research, service, and academic results. We look forward to implementing these innovative classroom solutions that will empower our teachers and administrators to assess progress and make data-driven decisions."
LeapTrack Assessment & Instruction System Overview
The LeapTrack system provides teachers with the ability to instantly assess their students, personalize student instruction, and continually monitor students' progress as they move toward mastery of state standards.
At the foundation of the LeapTrack System are the LeapPad and Quantum Pad personal learning tools. These multisensory tools are designed to administer assessments and deliver engaging instruction. With the use of these tools, students are engaged in self-directed learning that moves them toward mastery of state standards. The assessment library, for use with the LeapPad and Quantum Pad personal learning tools, spans grades K-5 in reading, language arts, vocabulary, early literacy, math, science, and social studies. The instructional library includes more than 450 full-color, high-interest skill cards.
The LeapTrack system also consists of a software application that manages how content is assigned to students and contains a suite of valuable reports that highlight student, class, school, and district progress against state standards and assigns prescriptive content to individual students based on their assessment results.
The Literacy Center Overview
The Literacy Center is a multisensory program that provides teachers with a structured approach to teaching phonemic awareness, phonics, and other early reading skills. The Literacy Center uses sight, sound, and touch to deliver a curriculum based upon the "best practices" in current reading research, and is designed to supplement and enhance any core reading program.
There are six editions of The Literacy Center: four grade-level editions including Prekindergarten, Kindergarten, Grade 1+, and Multi-Grade, along with two editions designed to link to specific basal reading programs: Open Court Grade K and Open Court Grade 1. The curriculum takes young learners from phonemic awareness to explicit instruction in phonics and into the wonderful world of reading.
The Literacy Center incorporates three key technology components:
- The LeapPad personal learning tool, which allows books to talk via touch interactive technology. Students can use the LeapPad platform to read specific words, sound out decodable words, or read entire pages.
- The LeapDesk workstation, which teaches letter names, letter sounds, and sight words through three modes - Learn, Assess, and Adapt.
- The LeapMat learning surface, which teaches letter-name recognition, letter-sound association, and spelling of three-letter words.
